Our Approach to Teaching IT: Developing Creative, Practical, and Career-Ready Skills.
In Key Stage 3 at The Rosewood School, we believe that Information Technology education should be engaging and relevant. Our IT curriculum focuses on developing not only practical digital skills but also creativity, communication, and an understanding of the diverse career opportunities in the digital world. Given that pupils are with us on a short-term basis, we have chosen to focus on specific parts of the National Curriculum that are most transferable: using digital tools and systems, digital literacy, and cyber responsibility.
We have chosen to focus on the following projects, wherein children learn key IT skills while focusing on practical application of IT within career roles.
Stop-Motion Animation
This project fosters creativity, storytelling, and technical skills in digital media production. Pupils learn how to plan, capture, and edit animations, gaining confidence with digital tools used in film, advertising, and entertainment industries.
Digital Photography & Editing
Through photography and photo editing, pupils develop an eye for visual composition and learn essential skills in digital image manipulation. These skills are vital in fields such as journalism, marketing, and graphic design.
Podcasting
Podcasting encourages communication, planning, and audio editing skills. As the popularity of podcasts continues to grow, pupils gain experience in digital content creation and media production, opening pathways into radio, journalism, and marketing careers.
Simple Video Editing
Pupils learn to capture and edit video content, a skill widely used in advertising, social media, education, and entertainment. This hands-on approach builds technical competence and digital literacy.
Social Media & Content Strategy
Understanding social media platforms and content planning is critical in today’s digital economy. Pupils explore how to create engaging content and use social media strategically — skills that are highly sought after in marketing, PR, and business.
Music Technology & Sound Engineering
By exploring digital audio tools, pupils develop skills in sound recording and editing. This opens doors to careers in music production, sound design, podcasting, and broadcasting.
